sostriage
Heart rate and respiratory rate from a camera
sostriage includes a live web camera capability that estimates pulse and respiratory rate under suitable conditions. The estimates are experimental. They have not been validated for clinical use, they are not medical-device measurements, and they must not independently guide diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, or clinical decisions.
01
When a picture is offered
Video is offered when breathing is described as usual, when the clinician asks, and on the paths where a look can change the decision. It is not offered during resuscitation, and not in a way that sends a lone caller out of the room.
The person stays with the patient. A picture is a clinical choice, not a task. If the caller is alone with someone who is not breathing, the line does not ask them to frame a shot. It keeps them on the call and brings a person in.
02
What the camera may show
Pulse and respiratory rate appear only when the picture is steady enough. If the signal does not meet the requirement, the field says the estimate is unavailable. It is not replaced with zero, and it is not inferred as normal.
These figures are experimental estimates from the camera. They have not been validated for clinical use. They must not be used for diagnosis, treatment, patient monitoring, or a clinical decision. A device reading is entered separately and labelled as a device reading.
03
Blood pressure stays with a cuff
A camera cannot measure pressure. The blood-pressure place on the screen says unavailable until someone enters a cuff reading. A pulse wave beside that reading is a trend. It is not a new pressure.
If a cuff was used at home in the last hour, the caller can say that number. The clinician sees it as a cuff reading. If there is no cuff, the line stays blank. A blank is not written as zero, and it is not guessed from the face.
04
The line on the handover
Camera figures travel as estimates. The handover says there was no physical examination, and that these figures are not medical-device readings. They are not for diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, or a clinical decision by themselves.
The receiving service sees the label. So does the person, on their own summary. A clinician who disagrees with the picture sets the outcome from their own judgement. The estimate does not outrank that signature.
